AMATEWERS ON THE TELLY?
Ever bin to one o' them amatewer operatic shows? Well they'n got a good un
down Owd Ill this wik."The Desert Sung" a-bein put on be the Tabernacle Amatewer
Operatic Society.
Now yo con stop that sniggerinl I know "The Desert Sung's" a bit o'd -the groce'~
boy used ter whistle the tunes when I was a nipper. Yo doe ear much whistlin' in
the street no moor; there ay many toons wuth whistlin'!
Now yo' may think that just 'cos these operatic lot am amatewers, an' ornery
folks like me an' yo in the daytime they bai much cop. But I'll tell yer summat,
they'm a jolly sight better'n some o' them wot gets on the telly. Wish the'd gi'
me
a job on the paeper as one o' them telly critics. I'd tel 'em , 1'l1 show 'em
up!. Them
dance bands wot' cor really play. a-wailinl an' a-blaertin' like dyin ducks in a
thun-
derstorm. Them comics wot tries to get excited an' cor! An' they doe arf think
theirselves wonderful. They waents clearin' out, the lot of 'em ani gi' somebody
else a chance.
An that goz for that Rock 'n' roll an' skiffle an' all! Pifle moor like! Beats
me ow
they gets on theer at all. Look at the money they picks up, I've 'eard say as 'ow
some on 'em gets five 'undred quid a wik an' more. No wunder the saits down the
palace cost so much! But it ai right. There's nothinl clever in wot they does
Yo' could goo down Craedley any Saturday night an' find a young chap ood be just
as good-or awful! Depends which way yo' looks at it.
I con enjoy a show good as anyone, but I likes to see a bit o' talent an' 'ear
music wi' a bit o toon in it. Last night was a real treat, an if 1 was yo' I'd
goo along
an see "The Desert Sung" yerself an' switch the telly off.
